Managing Ex-Offenders In Our Communities

A message from Tim Goddard (Police, Communications Officer, Cambridgeshire)

Do you have strong interpersonal skills, a balanced and objective approach and a genuine interest in contributing to public safety?

If so, we’re looking for someone to take on a key voluntary role within a team who manage and supervise potentially dangerous ex-offenders on our community.

The Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangement (MAPPA) involves Cambridgeshire Constabulary, The Probation Service, HM Prison Service, Local Authorities, Housing Associations and other professional and voluntary bodies in assessing and managing ex-offenders living in Cambridgeshire.

As the second of two lay advisors, you would sit on the MAPPA Strategic Management Board (SMB) as an equal partner with senior managers from all agencies involved and attend relevant meetings, as well as associated sub-groups and case reviews.

The work of MAPPA is both sensitive and challenging. It is vital the public has a voice in how this is managed, and lay advisors provide a crucial role by reflecting the views of the community. You would need to be prepared to challenge senior professionals, provide an objective and independent view, act as a sounding board and ultimately give reassurance that risk is being managed in an appropriate way.

This is an important voluntary post and is directed at individuals who would be genuinely committed to participating in a critical initiative on behalf of the community.

No formal qualifications are required – just strong interpersonal skills, a balanced and objective approach and a genuine interest in making a contribution to public safety and protection — as well as the confidence and ability to constructively challenge the views, assumptions and decisions of senior professionals.

You would need to spare a few hours each month, be able to travel within Cambridgeshire to attend meetings and be capable of dealing responsibly with sensitive information.

Applications are scheduled to close on 20 August, interviews for the post will take place during September (exact details to be confirmed) and the role will commence in late October when sign-off is received from the government minister.

If you would like to register your interest for the post, please contact (MAPPA co-ordinator) and (MAPPA lay advisor) with your details including a contact number and availability for a call back, following which applications forms will be sent.

Kind regards,

Tim Goddard
Communications officer
